How To Reduce Memorizing Verbs To Learn Spanish

It amazes me how much we learn about our own language when we learn a foreign tongue.  I fancied myself a bit of an English Language scholar prior to learning Spanish.  I quickly found out how little I knew about my own language.

Do you know what an infinitive verb is?  Check your response.  You’ll likely either fall into the “I never was much at English” group and immediately respond with a “no idea”.  Or you’ll join the larger of the 2 groups and you find yourself looking around your immediate vicinity for that distant faded mental English 101 classroom image that you know you’ve got stored in there and are hoping will pop up with the answer. “Yes I know what an infinitive verb is but… but… just a second….” This stuff challenges us.

For our purposes, an infinitive verb is an action word that is not assigned to a person or time.  Hence, it is infinite.  An infinitive verb is usually preceded by the particle “to” ie. to talk, to eat, to come etc…

All infinitive verbs end in ar, er or ir.  Examples:

It has got to be one of the, if not the most life enriching thing that I’ve done. 

To be able to communicate with another culture is an amazing thing.

This fact had an awful lot to do with my then wife and I deciding to sell out, pack up, and move our family to Costa Rica in 1999. 

Prior to that time, I had always admired and envied those that had a second language. We tried in the States to learn Spanish.  I bought a huge satellite dish and put it out in the yard just so we could get Spanish TV.  I thought that would be the way to get the kids to learn Spanish – NOT. 

At that time there was no Rosetta Stone, but I did scour the market and found what there was.  Berlitz has always been pretty good.  I bought their cassettes and memorized them.  “Hola Pedro. Como está?  Donde está María?” and so on.  We found a video set that assured us our kids would learn Spanish.  They did watch the videos and would mockingly say “Zozo está listo para los panquekes?”

Further studies included yoga, massage, reflexology and prana theraby with Hawaii's McKenzie Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine followed by Kriya Yoga training and initiation at the Self-Realization fellowship retreat center in Encinitas, California (known as 'Swami's' among southern California surfers). From 1980 to 1997 I served as an Oregon Certified EMT II and Firefighter with the Powers Rural Fire and Rescue Service.
